‘Spooktacular’ locations near The Barn – Ilkley Moor, Skipton Castle and East Riddlesden Hall

With Halloween just around the corner, we thought we’d get you in the mood for all things ‘spooky’ by telling you about a couple of haunted locations near The Barn. Thankfully, our luxury barn conversion hasn’t given us any reason to suspect our guests may share their holidays with a ghostly presence. However, there are countless places nearby where tourists and locals have reported paranormal encounters!

Ilkley Moor is right on our doorstep and it has attracts a great deal of attention from ‘believers’ due to the ghost sightings and alien encounters in its lengthy record of paranormal activity. The dramatic landscape of our rocky moors provides the perfect backdrop for spooky stories and tales of the unexpected. Step outside The Barn after sunset and take a walk to the famous Cow and Calf rocks to see if you can spot the mysterious manifestation of the dark beast said to roam the hills.

Venture slightly further afield and you can find two Yorkshire locations that are notoriously haunted by various apparitions.

Haunted Locations Near Ilkley…

Skipton Castle

Skipton’s iconic castle sits proudly at the top of the town’s award-winning High Street. It is one of the best-preserved medieval castles in England and attracts huge numbers of visitors throughout the year.

Dating back 900 years, it is no surprise that this stone fortress has attracted interest from ghost hunters. The ghost of a young girl dressed in Georgian attire is often spotted roaming the castle grounds. Some previous visitors even claim to have caught her on camera.

East Riddlesden Hall

East Riddlesden Hall is a former agricultural property with foundations that date back as far as 973AD. Located near the town of Keighley, the stone used to construct the building was sourced from our very own Ilkley Moor. The building has never been home to nobility and it boasts no regal residents, however, its location and architecture have led to it being used as a film and television set on various occasions. Scenes for the BBC drama ‘Gunpowder’ were filmed in the dining room and great chamber.

It also featured in an episode of the paranormal investigation programme ‘Most Haunted’, in which Yvette Fielding and her team attempted to make contact with one of the many ghosts reported to haunt the 17th century mansion.

There have been many ghostly sightings recorded at the National Trust property, but the sighting reported in the Telegraph and Argus last year, has to be our favourite:
